✅ QUESTION

Many old buildings protected by law are part of a nation’s history. Some people think they should be knocked down and replaced by news ones. How
important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

🔰 ANSWER

Traditional architecture, which is safeguarded by law, is part of the heritage of a country. There are some who think that old structures should be demolished and more modern buildings be built. Old traditional buildings need to be kept and maintained and history should not be wiped out by the desire to modernise.

There are some, such as property developers, who think old traditional historic buildings ought to be demolished and the land used to construct modern
apartments, sports facilities or shopping complexes. It is their belief therefore, that this push for modernisation benefits society as a whole, and it would be much better for the economy. For example, cities in Japan have very few old buildings older than 50 years old. Even traditional looking houses have be rebuilt using new materials. Most old houses are knocked down and tall apartment blocks are constructed, so there is very little architectural heritage left.

This desire for progress often erases historical buildings and therefore destroys the traditional atmosphere of a town or city. It is regrettable when the old way of living is wiped out to make way for functional steel and glass buildings and highways. In
many cases, huge shopping malls are built in their place and the soul of an area is completely changed for the worse. For instance, in China over the past 30 years, there has been a big push for modernisation and whole towns and villages that were once the traditional heartland of China, have been demolished and replaced by uninspiring sprawling metropolis.

In conclusion, traditional old buildings should be kept and maintained and not given over to developers. When a traditional historical town or village is demolished, it has a negative effect on the local culture and its people.
